Avios are the shared currency of the IAG airline group — British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, and Vueling. All major US bank points transfer to Avios at 1:1, making this one of the most accessible programs for American travelers.
Best for: American Airlines partner bookings, short-haul BA flights, partner network across oneworld
Best for: Iberia-operated flights to Spain and Latin America — often no fuel surcharges vs. BA
Best for: transatlantic flights from US to Dublin/Shannon — pre-clearance at US airports is a major perk
Best for: short-haul Europe within Spain and Mediterranean routes operated by Vueling
| Route (distance) | Economy (OW) | Business (OW) |
|---|---|---|
| US domestic short (<650 mi) | 7,500 | 15,000 |
| US domestic medium (651–1,150 mi) | 10,000 | 20,000 |
| US–London/Europe (transatlantic) | 26,000 | 50,000 |
| US East–Japan/Asia | 45,000 | 85,000 |
| US West–Japan/Asia | 35,000 | 65,000 |
Note: BA adds fuel surcharges on BA-operated flights. Book via American Airlines or Iberia for partner flights to avoid surcharges.
British Airways adds significant fuel surcharges (YQ fees) when you book BA-operated flights. A transatlantic business class award booked through BA Executive Club on a BA flight can cost $400–600 in surcharges on top of the Avios.
Solution: Use Avios to book non-BA partner flights. American Airlines flights booked via BA Executive Club have no fuel surcharges. Iberia-operated transatlantic flights booked via Iberia Plus also have lower surcharges than BA. Alaska Airlines flights can also be booked via BA Executive Club with minimal fees.
One of the most underused Avios strategies is booking short-haul European flights on British Airways. Flights under 650 miles — London to Edinburgh, London to Amsterdam, or Madrid to Barcelona — cost just 8,000 Avios in economy, often less than the equivalent cash fare which can reach £80–200 depending on the season. This is particularly powerful during peak travel periods when cash prices spike.
British Airways also lets you combine Avios from both the BA Executive Club and Iberia Plus accounts. If your spouse has Iberia points and you have BA points, you can use both pools independently to book your respective tickets on the same flight. There is no need to pool them into a single account — just book two separate award tickets using each program's balance.
For longer hauls, the distance-based model works against Avios. A JFK–LHR business class award at 50,000 Avios looks competitive until you add British Airways fuel surcharges ($600+). The workaround: book the same JFK–LHR route using American Airlines metal (booked via BA Executive Club) — no surcharges, same 50,000 Avios cost. This single tactic is why experienced award travelers keep a BA account even when they rarely fly British Airways itself.
Fluxora tracks live award availability including programs with no fuel surcharges. Compare Alaska, Aeroplan, Flying Blue, and Virgin Atlantic for the same routes.
